Oh yeah, you know it is the first day of school. No one, I mean NO ONE...is more excited than me. The new school year is full of possibility. It is a another chance to do it right, make some changes, be who you want to be...to begin again. A fresh start.
I've always treated the first day of school like most people treat New Year's Day, resolutions and all. I don't understand how people think January 1 is going to bring them a new beginning when the odds are they will be waking up hungover from either too much bubbly, too much food, and not enough sleep. That is just no way to start off change. You begin behind the eight ball.
But the first day of school, you prepare for...new clothes, new supplies, new routines. You spend weeks getting ready...a little each day until you wake up and WOW, you are ready. Feeling great in your new duds and great haircut . Now that is how you start off change.
The Von Bruening boys woke up early because they wanted to be awake when their brand new alarm clock went off (alarm clock is part of the new routine --no more Mommy waking them up). It was so funny to see them standing their in their pj's staring at the clock, waiting for the numbers to flip. The things that amaze kids.
So here we are, beginning again. We made our resolutions and said a prayer for how we want the year to go...good grades, great friends, lots of fun and the ever important, "don't get in trouble".
I wish you well my sweet, sweet boys. A brand new year for you! Make yourselves proud! (Don't worry about me --I am already proud).
And for all of you blog readers, Happy First Day of School! You get to begin again.

Wel, after a wildly successful wedding season, Lou and I took the kids to Lake Oconee for a short vacation. And yes, I am sure you have noticed my lack attention to you, my blog readers. I'll be gearing up soon to share all of our gorgeous brides from the early 2010. Really, I promise!!!

Yes, yes, I am in Grand Cayman for the Engage 10 luxury wedding business summit...but I came a week early and brought my favorite guys with me. Some outtakes of their life of leisure (sorry, I just don't pick up the camera when I am not working...don't want vacation to feel like work:)
One of the best things about Engage is the new friends you make (and of course, hangin' with the old peeps, too!). I met Cayman's own, amazingly talented Rebecca Davidson at the last Engage in Cayman one year ago...but it was brief. She had her sweet 4-day-old with her. I was amazed that she was even coherent --with the lack of sleep that comes with a newborn, let alone attending Engage. Impressive, to say the least.
Well, this year, I was lucky...uber lucky, to have her photograph my family while we are in Cayman. As you can see, she is talented and Lord, help us all, when we get together to talk about business and motherhood...we could solve the world's problems.
February is a month to breath for me. You would think that January would be a restful month but recouping from the holidays, getting back into the routine and thinking and planning for the future fill up the time before "poof" - 31 days GONE.
But February, I take time to breathe again...time for me, for my kids and for Louis. I don't go into the office everyday religiously. I take a few more days to respond. I let everything around me breathe. I force myself to stop. I cook more. I watch more movies. I enjoy life...because March bears down on me, hard and fast. Why, oh, why doesn't February have 31 days???
Lou and I took some time for an overnight trip to Atlanta and the Georgia Aquarium. Our kids marveled at every exhibit, every touch tank, and we delighted in a successful family trip. Score 1 for cool parents....
But Mother Nature would not be outdone. Icy raindrops shooting to the ground seemed to stop in midair, like a parachutist who just pulled the cord...turning into soft snowflakes gently cascading to the ground...now that impressed my kids. They ran out of Johnny Rockets abandoning absolutely delicious milkshakes for snow.
And couldn't wait to run around in the snow at a rest stop.
And when all was quiet, kids in bed...I took a moment to marvel, myself, and capture one of the few times in history that snow touched the marshes of Savannah.
