Don't Ask Donna - The DJ
02.04.10  |  Personal

I had lunch last week with some DJ friends and after the usual business was out of the way the conversation naturally turned to bad DJ stories.
We laughed until my sides hurt.

Let me first say this...I am not pro-band or pro-DJ. I am PRO PROFESSIONAL. A fabulous DJ is one-thousand times better than a crappy band and vice versa.
The DJ is the linchpin in a wedding. He has the power to turn an elegant affair into a cheesy, cable special in 10 minutes flat. I've seen them all...

the DJ who missed his calling as a broadway star --singing along to every song
the DJ who wears the musical note vest and spends most of his time on the dance floor like he is a guest
the DJ who hangs a huge banner like your wedding is a high school prom and repeatedly announces that this is the the "DJ Stan Show".
the DJ who talks and talks and talks...no one cares about how the tradition of the cake cutting, garter toss, father/daughter dance came to be
the DJ who is plastered and slurs the way through the night
the DJ who plays the Culture Club's greatest hits and other fine hits!
the DJ who likes to "slow it down" just when the party is pumping or goes from Kanye West to Karen Carpentar in the same set.
the DJ who pauses in between each song --making the crowd pause, come down and then work right back up again.
the DJ who hits on the bridesmaids, bride or worse, the MOB. (Yes, I've seen it)

A fabulous DJ understands that his role is the "gracious emcee". He follows the timeline, ensures the guests are entertained and paces the party. He speaks very little and can read the crowd. He brings the party to a pinnacle, like a slow build to the frenzy...when the crowd can't get enough. He wears black (no tuxes needed), doesn't drink on the job and doesn't dance with Grandma or make sexual remarks about or to the bride. He knows how to fade out a dud of a song and doesn't pause between songs.

But above all, he knows when to play "Living On A Prayer" or "Brick House".

Oh, and another note...money doesn't always matter. I've seen crazy expensive club DJ's from LA who killed and I mean killed a wedding. A wedding is a special family event...a celebration. There is a certain finesse in mastering the event and of the dozens and dozens of DJ's I've seen, I can count on one hand how many I would truly recommend. Yep, one hand. Good ones are few are far between.

GET REFERENCES! And lots of them.
